The Australian Women’s Football Team has had the perfect run into hosting the World Cup later this year.
A 3-0 scoreline underlined the Matilda’s dominance of the Cup Of Nations tournament where the Aussies, ranked #12 in the world, remained undefeated throughout the event, and convincingly held World #44 Jamacia scoreless after also defeating Spain (#7) in the tournament, as well as Canada (#6) and Sweden (#3) in friendlies late last year.
Matildas Goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold has all but locked in her spot in the squad after being awarded the Cup of Nations Player of the Tournament.
The win was the team’s seventh straight, coach Tony Gustavsson said post-match they face a fitness headache with some players facing three months on the sidelines, while others are travelling around the world to continue European or American competitions that don’t wrap up until late May
“What do we do with the players that finish the leagues earlier, how can we make sure we cover that gap?” Gustavsson said.
“We are looking into what those situations can look like because it’s a massively important part of our preparation for the World Cup.”
