GROVEDALE has secured its first win of the GFNL Senior Footy season with a 43-point victory over Lara in the Spirit of ANZAC Match at the Snakepit.
After going down to South Barwon in wet conditions in Round One, the Tigers rallied to win the twilight clash 14.13 (97) to 7.12 (54), in beautiful conditions at Lara.
Grovedale Coach Daniel Fraser said it was a good team performance in the second half, after an arm wrestle before half time saw the Tigers up by just 12 points at the main break.
“I just thought probably in the second half of that second quarter Lara probably got on top around the stoppage.”
“They were probably winning more groundball so we just spoke about making sure we could win more groundballs.”
“I thought our response in the third quarter when the tempo of the game lifted was really good.”
“There was probably four, five, six, seven, eight blokes who really stood up.”
“Ryan (Abbott) in the middle stood up, (Brady) Ferguson started to grab a couple forward, we started to get a bit of dominance out of the middle so that was certainly integral to us winning the game.”
Fraser said the very young side is excited for what the future holds, particularly praising the likes of youngsters Tom Steven and Sam Walker.
“We’re a really young group that’s growing together.”
“It’s going to take a little bit of time but there’s some great signs.”
“If they keep sticking together there’s no doubt that there’s some real successes coming for our footy club over the next few years.”
