Essendons Durham banned for dangerous tackle

Essendon dasher Sam Durham has been slapped with a one-match ban for a dangerous tackle on Geelong’s Mark Blicavs.

Durham is the latest player cited under the AFL’s crackdown on dangerous tackles, after slinging Blicavs to the MCG turf in the third quarter of Essendon’s 28-point loss on Sunday.

Match review officer Michael Christian assessed the rough conduct charge as high contact, medium impact and careless conduct.

Essendon have until 11am (AEST) on Tuesday to decide whether they will challenge the charge at the AFL tribunal in an attempt to free Durham to play against Port Adelaide.

Fremantle have accepted Matthew Johnson’s two-match ban for his dangerous tackle on Brisbane veteran Dayne Zorko and he will miss games against Hawthorn and Sydney.

Johnson’s initial tackle on Zorko on Saturday slipped high and as the umpire blew for a free kick, the Dockers youngster dumped his opponent into the ground.

Dockers teammate Brandon Walker said the incident had immediately affected Johnson.

“Even during the game I could already tell he was a little bit upset about it,” Walker said.

“It’s just in the moment of things … some of us players are trying to learn how to tackle in that way and avoid it.

“He was obviously upset but he’ll move on and come back stronger.”

Walker admitted executing different tackling techniques in the heat of battle was difficult.

“It’s pretty hard actually because in the moment you’re not really thinking about being gentle with someone,” he said.

“You’re going after the ball and being aggressive.

“Technique, I reckon will, have to change a little bit in the way we tackle but it’s pretty hard in the moment to change that mindset or think about it.

“It’s just something we’ve got to learn.”

West Coast’s Sam Petrevski-Seton has accepted his one-match ban for a dangerous tackle on Carlton’s Alex Cincotta.

Collingwood midfielder Tom Mitchell can accept a $1000 fine after being charged with attempted tripping of Adelaide’s Brodie Smith.
